Anti-government protesters began a sit-in inside the Environmental Ministry building in Beirut on Tuesday, calling on minister to resign over the garbage crisis that has ignited violent protests in Beirut.
The minister has refused to resign even though piles of garbage have been left uncollected for weeks since the government closed the city’s main landfill without finding a replacement.
“We are here to express our opinion peacefully and we will not leave until the minister resigns,” said protester Lucien Bourjeily from inside the building.
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the building to support their colleagues who staged a sit-in outside the the environmental minister’s office. However, soldiers used violent force against the Lebanese protesters inside the environment ministry to remove them.
