The Sustainable Alternative Lighting project, otherwise known as SALt, has developed a salt-water lamp that runs purely on saltwater. Based in the island nation of the Philippines where the cost of candles, paraffin, or battery-operated lamps have hit the poor very hard, this project is exciting for many reasons.
The lamp works by taking advantage of the difference in “electrical potential” between salty water and another medium in the battery. Unlike kerosene this lamp represents absolutely no risk for fire, and its relatively simple concept should put light into the hands of even the poorest families.
The units currently generate only a few watts, which is enough to make an LED shine brightly. Advances and improvements in this technology are increasing the watts so that it can charge even the most energy-hungry smartphone.
This is a life-changing technology for those who are keen to reduce their environmental impact while retaining the ability to use electricity. It is a giant win for both those who cannot or do not want to light their homes using more conventional types of electricity.
